Today I used my heart rate monitor for the first time as it should be used, to monitor my heart. Haha, ok no seriously, I used the heart rate monitor to keep my heart rate under 180. Don't freak, my max is like over 200 and it was super gross outside; Humidity say whaaaaaat. I set the watch so it would beep at me as soon as my heart went above the allowed rate. Man that happened quickly.
I spent the entire run running and walking then running then walking etc etc. It was the slowest 6 miles I have ever run. 1:22:46. Thats almost a 14 minute mile pace. But it was nice to concentrate on heart rate instead of time; it actually made the running go my easier. I forgot my miniPod but I didn't even realize I forgot it until mile 5, and the funny thing is that I didn't even miss it!
The break down:
Mile 1: 14.40 HR: 175
Mile 2: 12:40 HR: 176
Mile 3: 13.14 HR: 175
Mile 4: 14:48 HR: 176
Mile 5: 13:03 HR: 177
Mile 6: 14:19 HR: 178
Average heart rate - 175
Max heart rate- 189

I've heard from many people that they were forced to slow down a lot at first when they started training based on heart rate. Apparently it really works in the long run! Good luck.
I think a heart rate monitor thing came with my Garmin but I've yet to use it. Are you supposed to stay at a certain rate to burn more calories? I'll have to figure this all out hah.
I LOVE running with my HRM and tracking it... its fun to play with!!! :)
I've been tempted to get a heart rate monitor...you'll have to keep us posted on how you like it and if it helps with your training or not.
