Father's Day Race

Before the race in our coral.

Wet!

Happy Father's Day!! My dad competed in triathlons back in the 80's. He did half iron mans and everything. Even though he doesn't really run anymore, he still inspires me to keep pushing myself. Now I'm trying to get him to run a marathon with me. He does about a mile every day or so. He doesn't think its possible, but I have faith!
So I have been on the d/l for the past 3 weeks since the marathon. My knee is starting to feel better though! Lots of stretching and relaxing. I had a facial and massages yesterday and the woman told me about my unbalanced legs. I knew that, hence why I run on my toes. She gave me some stretching tips and some things I can do to help even out my leg muscles.
Today I woke up early to participate in the Fathers Day 5 mile run for prostate cancer. I ran it with my sister, Jenna. My friend kristin was suppose to run too but she had to ball becuase she wasn't feeling so hot. Even though my sister is a faster runner than I am I kept pace with her. Damn I'm out of shape! We ran the first 2.5 miles at about a 10:40 minute mile pace. Because of my knee and the fact that I haven't really been training, I decided that this race was going to be an easy run and that if I needed to walk, I would walk. So I walked some and let Jenna keep on running.
Central park is a beast to run in. Its so hilly. Everyone is like "the east side isn't as bad as the west side." No, all sides of this loop suck. I swear there is no down hill. Around the 3 mile mark I started to feel like rumbles in my tummy. Bathroom break was needed. I ran past a couple of port-a-potties but the smell was so nasty that I kept on running. My feet started to hurt because I was wearing some older shoes since it was wet outside. I need new shoes. I need to go up a full size instead of a half size. My feet are swelling too much. Another trip to Jack Rabbits is needed. I just need to save up monies to buy some.
I saw Alex, Jenna's boyfriend around mile 4. It was great to see someone I knew. I gave him a high five and kept on going. Now I was starting to feel nauseous. Like really nauseous. the fact that some people in the race have not heard of this new product called deodorant did not help the situation. I have never gotten sick while running before. Weird. I managed to suck it up and finish the race. Alex and Jenna were cheering me on and I finished strong. Then went over to a garbage can and threw up. Only water but it helped a lot. I guess I over hydrated, but I had been sooooo thirty last night and this morning. Weird. Oh well. I finished in 58.25 minutes!

The race was on ABC channel 7 here in NYC. My sister had recorded it and guess who's forehead is now famous! MINE! Thats right, my forehead made it on TV!

After the race Jenna decided to take this picture. Wet as a dog! But I'm sure most of that is sweat!

It felt good to get back out there and run again. I realized how much I have missed running. I hope to go to the gym this week and do some easy runs on the softer treadmill. I have signed up with Jenna and Shannon for the Wine Glass marathon in Corning, NY on October 4th. I like wine and I would gladly run 26.2 miles for it!

First off, you forgot to mention the humidity was like, a million percent (97% actually) and it was HOT! MUGGY! GROSS! I have never been so thirsty when running. Second, what was with the freakin' hills!? Third, I look weird in that first picture, like I have a dislocated head. And Fourth, I like running races with you. You help me keep pace when I want to run like a freak (and subsequently, pass out and die). It was awesome to be able to scream and yell for you! I'm super proud of my awesome sister! MUCHO LOVE!

Congratulations on the race! Sorry to hear you had a rough time with your tummy. I threw up a ton of water after a half last year...who would have thought you could drink too much water?! Hope you feel okay now!

i was there too! and it was humid and nasty as ish too - grr... i haven't ran in a while - been sick for the past week but i signed up for this race weeks ago so I dragged my ass to CP and did it anyway. say myself on tv too :) The wine glass marathon sounds interesting - i may do it too! I'm still wimping out on a marathon (especially since i'll have the NIke 1/2 the week after) so I may do a team relay instead.

PS - I started a running blog and decided on a kick-ass name for it. Ahem. It's called "kicking some asphalt" haha. Also, the Queens half marathon is Sept 20th. The one on August 16th is the NYC half marathon. I'm doing the Queens one...

PPS - If you registered for the NYC one and not the Queens one, I could possibly be persuaded to register for that one as well, provided you let me know asap so I can change my training schedule.

A little birdie told me (err, tweeted) that it's your Birthday! Not sure if you'll be posting today, so I wanted to drop by and wish you a happy one. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Have a great day!
